Application Architect

Job description

BrightSpark is recruiting an experienced Application Architect for a highly regarded, New Zealand‑owned technology organisation undergoing a long‑term digital transformation for a large global customer.

This is a hands‑on, engineering‑led architecture role focused squarely on applications - not enterprise platforms or landing zones. You’ll set technical direction across a complex Microsoft environment and be a trusted authority for both engineers and senior customer stakeholders.

The Opportunity

Embedded within a multi‑year transformation programme, you will own the application architecture across legacy and modern .NET solutions, guiding the journey from .NET Framework 4.x through to modern .NET (up to .NET 10).
You’ll define clean, durable patterns, uplift legacy systems incrementally, design the API and integration landscape, and mentor teams to deliver high‑quality, maintainable software at pace.

This role is based in Auckland, with a hybrid working model (minimum two days in the office).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Define and evolve application architecture across a mixed .NET estate (Framework 4.x → modern .NET), setting and owning the modernisation roadmap
  • Lead frontend‑focused architecture for Angular SPA applications, defining stable, versioned API interaction models
  • Design and govern API contracts for first‑party systems and third‑party integrations
  • Establish and manage a pragmatic technical debt remediation roadmap that supports live delivery
  • Define and enforce engineering standards including DDD, clean architecture, automated testing, CI/CD and code review practices
  • Facilitate architecture workshops and provide technical governance through sprint and release cycles
  • Mentor senior engineers and emerging architects, building long‑term capability across teams
  • Act as the technical voice in customer‑facing discussions, clearly explaining and defending architecture decisions to non‑technical leaders

About You

Essential experience:
  • Deep, hands‑on experience with .NET Framework 4.x and modern .NET (6–10) in live production environments
  • Proven experience modernising legacy applications using patterns such as strangler fig, anti‑corruption layers and incremental migration
  • Strong API and integration design experience (REST, messaging, third‑party integrations)
  • Working knowledge of modern SPA frameworks, with Angular experience preferred
  • Experience designing frontend‑facing application architectures and managing API contracts
  • Azure application experience including App Services, Azure Functions, API Management, Azure SQL and Service Bus
  • Solid understanding of web application security (authentication, authorisation, secrets management)
  • Demonstrated ability to reduce technical debt as part of active delivery
  • Strong mentoring capability and proven client‑facing communication skills
Desirable:
  • Experience with Zero‑Trust security, DevSecOps and FinOps
  • Microsoft Azure certifications
  • iSAQB Certified Professional for Software Architecture

What’s on Offer

  • Competitive salary package, aligned to experience
  • Fully subsidised medical insurance, with discounted cover for family
  • Enhanced parental leave benefits
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements
  • Strong focus on professional growth and continuous learning
  • Volunteer days and community involvement initiatives
  • Supportive, inclusive, and values‑driven workplace culture

Additional Information
  • Applicants must currently reside in Auckland and hold the appropriate work visa
  • A Ministry of Justice criminal record check is required
